Abstract

I will introduce a categorical and diagrammatic approach to defining and characterising higher-order quantum operations. In this framework, linear-algebraic constraints are replaced by compositional axioms that capture, in an abstract way, the notion of a local operation. Previous work showed that these axioms recover quantum superchannels from the circuit model of quantum channels. In this talk, I will give an overview of the approach and then focus on new results: a diagrammatic characterisation of supermaps on general theories beyond quantum mechanics [1], and an extension to transformations between more general higher-order quantum objects [2].[1] https://arxiv.org/abs/2602.23865[2] https://arxiv.org/abs/2603.11221
